Piper Shores is excited to announce the official opening of the Medical Clinic at The Meadows campus today, August 9, 2024. Developed in partnership with the University of New England (UNE), the new clinic will be staffed by qualified family physicians and nurse practitioners from UNE, led by Dr. Kathryn Brandt, Clinical Professor at the UNE College of Osteopathic Medicine and Chair to the Department of Primary Care, along with Dr. Bill Burge, Associate Clinical Professor. This on-campus service augments Piper Shores’ extensive range of wellness offerings, which include Personal Care, In-Home Care, Medical Emergency Response Care, and an array of specialty services. As Maine’s premier life plan retirement community, Piper Shores offers comprehensive wellness and healthcare services tailored to meet the diverse needs of residents throughout their lives.
“The health and well-being of our residents is always our top priority,” said Philip Jean, CEO of Piper Shores. “With over 450 residents in our care, we are proud to introduce this new preventive and supportive care service as a significant milestone in our commitment to providing high-quality healthcare. The clinic will treat a wide range of conditions, complementing our existing services.”
Piper Shores’ wellness offerings are designed to address a broad spectrum of resident needs. The new walk-in style clinic, located on The Meadows campus, will provide timely and convenient care for minor conditions that are not related to emergency, personal care, or home health care. Conditions treated include allergies, abdominal pain, bloody noses, bruises, minor burns, coughs, earaches, eye irritation, fever, flu, nausea, neck pain, skin rashes, sprains, and strains. This clinic ensures that residents’ common health concerns can be addressed on-site. Piper Shores remains steadfast in providing exceptional healthcare services to residents, and this partnership with UNE enhances their ability to deliver on that promise.
“This exciting partnership with the University of New England not only enhances our ability to meet the evolving needs of our community but also offers valuable learning experiences for university students under the guidance of qualified physicians,” continued Jean. “By continuing to lead in the continuing care retirement community space, we ensure that residents and their families have peace of mind knowing they receive comprehensive, top-notch care.”
A Partnership with a Unified Vision for Care and Education
The University of New England is among the few private universities with a comprehensive health education mission, encompassing medicine, pharmacy, dental medicine, nursing, and allied health professions. Historically MatureCare, one of UNE’s teaching practices, has focused on skilled nursing and facility care, but the practice is diversifying. Piper Shores sought additional care options for residents on its two campuses, leading to the collaborative development of these walk-in services provided by the Medical Clinic at The Meadows. With the guidance of leading UNE physicians, UNE students will gain valuable learning experiences, including shadowing and working directly with professors who are also practicing physicians, helping them transition smoothly into the workforce upon graduation.
“Our partnership with Piper Shores aligns perfectly with our mission to expand and diversify our healthcare offerings for older adults,” said Dr. Kathryn Brandt. “UNE has a long-standing commitment to training healthcare professionals and serving older adults in Maine. This clinic not only provides essential medical services but also serves as a teaching practice where we can model exemplary care for our students. It’s a tremendous opportunity for our mature care physicians to engage with healthier, more vigorous older adults, providing our students a broader range of medical experiences. Our involvement in this clinic allows us to stretch our skills and return to the comprehensive medical care we were trained to provide, benefiting both the residents of Piper Shores and our faculty.”
Piper Shores Medical Clinic at The Meadows opens on August 9, 2024, and is only available to Piper Shores Residents.
