Piper Shores, Maine’s first and only nonprofit lifecare retirement community, today announced that it received a 5-Star quality rating from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), which recently ranked more than 15,800 nursing homes throughout the United States. The ratings, from 1 to 5 Stars, were based on health inspection surveys, staffing information and several quality of care measures reported to the agency.
In an earlier press release, CMS Acting Administrator Kerry Weems said “Our goal in developing this unprecedented quality rating system is to provide families a straightforward assessment of nursing home quality, with meaningful distinctions between high and low performing homes. The new information will also help consumers and families identify important questions to ask nursing homes and challenge nursing homes to improve their quality of care.”
The ratings, which plan to be updated monthly, can be found at the Medicare website. In this first round of quality ratings, only 12 percent of the nation’s nursing homes received a full five star rating. The ratings were based on how well homes scored on staffing and on 10 quality measures, including how homes responded to a patient’s declining mobility, high-risk pressure ulcers (bed sores) and pain. According to the report, Maine had one of the highest percentages of 5-Star nursing care communities in the country with nearly one in four receiving the highest rating.
“We are very pleased that Holbrook is ranked alongside some of the very best skilled nursing care communities in the country,” said Deb Riddel, executive director at Piper Shores. “The entire staff of Piper Shores and Holbrook Health Center should be very proud of this achievement. It is only through their hard work and dedication to quality care that we are able to achieve this high honor.”
